I Will Not Be Dressing Like A Slut For Halloween... EVER!

I get so excited for Halloween! It is one of my favorite holidays - second to my birthday! It combines my two favorite things: candy and playing dress up (oh and skulls). I love fashion so of course I love dressing up. I am usually planning my costume WAY in advance. It's so much fun! You can make a witty commentary on some pop culture event or scare the crap out of someone. No other holiday allows you such pleasure.

As a kid, I was a devil 6 years in a row (slight exaggeration), a witch or some form of candy. I never really wanted to be the princess or bride unless it was a zombie bride. But even as a child, I knew there were other options for girls rather than princesses and fairies.

Now that I'm in 20s...Halloween has a taken on a whole new meaning. It is now the official holiday where girls dress like sluts. I'm not sure if women agreed to this idea or guys made an excuse to create a holiday around this. My sister was trying to find a costume for her office Halloween party and she said they were all inappropriate. Why can't a woman find a non-slutty costume? It doesn't exist. Yes, it forces to create original costumes ourselves. But the point is that Halloween stores market to women with the idea that they want to dress slutty. Someone must be buying them if they invent new ways to slutify (my own word) a costume every year.

Slutty Spongebob?!

Even if you Google female Halloween costume, this is what comes up:

I don't see anything I would wear. Why does Halloween have to be sexified? There are plenty of costume ideas for women that don't have to be slutty.

For example, one costume idea I have is "Chuck" from the NBC show with the same name but of course, the female version. All I need are black slacks, a white button up, converse sneakers and a tie. Done. Nothing slutty about that!

What are you dressing up as this Halloween?

  1. Yeah I wanted to be a mod stewardess but all I see are slutty costumes. So I have to put something together myself.

  2. I agree! I have two parties this year. The first one is a 70's party so im going as a hippie. The 2nd one I am dressing up as a rich woman from the 20's.
I agree- slutty costumes are the worst.
I used clothing i already had to make my costumes plus a few reusable accessories.

  3. Those are some good suggestions.

Many people look for Halloween costume ideas, but I have put together a list of fun things to do with your Halloween costumes even after October 31st. http://www.ragingwisdom.com/?p=373 If you have your own funny ideas I would love to hear them.

  4. I was a teenager in the 90s & I don't remember costumes being slutty at all. At least not the one they sold in stores. I'm not a bit surprised that we can no longer find halloween costumes that don't look like they came out of the pages of Frederick's Hollywood. Last year, I didn't find it funny that little kids dressed up like the cast from the Jersey Shore. We as a society have allowed this for so many years to seep into our culture. This trash rules television & movies. So quite frankly I'm not surprised.

Slutty girls get to act themselves on halloween. I just don't remember halloween being this way, from the 70s, 80s to the 90s. Who the hell thought it was cute to wear a stripper costume?

I'm also using my own clothes...

  5. I have to admit, I used to be one of those girls. When you live and breathe in a slutty college town, there's something in the water. Even though I was happily involved with my now husband, I still felt the need to wear "slutty goldilocks" "slutty pirate" and "slutty nurse" but as I've gotten older, I'm suddenly a little alarmed by my behavior from the past. This year, my only excuse to wear a costume involves a party where tiny children will be present. Besides that fact, I really have no desire to throw on fishnet thigh-highs and a corset.
I'm gonna be Kelly Kapowski from Saved by the Bell. I snagged a Bayside Tigers off the shoulder grey sweatshirt (that I fully intend on wearing over and over again after yoga class, so cozy) and paired with some thrifted jean shorts and keds ... fluff the bangs ... add an "I love Zack Morris" button and pouf. Under 30 dollars and hilarious. And most importantly, not showing any T&A.

  7. I don't like how Halloween costumes always go the slutty route for women. There's nothing creative with costumes like that.

This year I'm going as the TARDIS from Doctor Who, but in a 50's style with the poodle skirt and everything.

  8. GUILTY. Ive done the slutty costume, I wanna say once. I was a slutty officer and my bf at the time was my prisoner haha. So does that help lessen the sluttyness of it??

I have no idea what to be for halloween this yr nor have I really planned it. Ive had so many other things on mind. :( I DID buy a sexy costume lingerie tho as a surprise for the bf!! hahaha His eyes only tho!

  9. The thing is, I don't see why it matters. It's just one day. I personally think that word is pretty offensive.
Just because someone is wearing a short dress doesn't make them a "slut". It just means that maybe they can't normally wear that sort of clothing without getting harassed, and it's the one day of the year that you can wear that stuff with no consequences, or having people follow you and demean you and yell out obscenities.
Shaming people for wearing those costumes is ignoring the larger issue, That women aren't supposed to be sexual in nature, or "Show too much" or attract too much attention, or else they're given negative names and shamed for it. Personally I like this article: http://www.xojane.com/clothes/do-dont-slutty-halloween-costume

    1. I'm saying it's sad that the only Halloween costumes available to women are slutty ones. I'm not saying a short dress equals slut. I'm saying turning innocent children cartoons like Sponge Bob into something sexual is just ridiculous. Women find any holiday to dress slutty just check out Santa Con in New York City... it's not just Halloween.

  10. My 11 year old daughter wants to be a wolf or a husky (she likes animals) a cute one not a slutty one and not an ugly werewolf. Just something cute. Not an annoying princess!
It drives me insane that all girls costumes are indeed slutty, skanky. My daughter WILL NOT nor does she want to dress like that...
