Don't Believe the Hype: Primer Edition

Primers can be a life saver! They can even your skin tone, help your makeup last forever and keep your oily skin in check. There are a lot out there promising to do a lot of things. Here are some that I would say save your precious pennies:

Pixi Flawless Beauty Primer No.1 EvenSkin $20 - Received a sample in one of my Target grab bags. It is supposed to match your skin's color but it just made me orange.

Smashbox Photo Finish Hydrating Foundation Primer $42 - I like their Photo Ready primer (which is $6 cheaper btw) but not this version didn't do anything special for me. Not worth the hefty price tag in my opinion. Received as a Klout perk. Read my original review here.

Julep Blank Canvas Mattifying Face Primer $28 - Received in my September Julep Maven box. This primer promises to "absorb shine, brighten skin, and lock in moisture for 24 hours" all while "reducing the appearance of wrinkles and pores." I found this primer too thick for my liking. Just felt like it was sitting on top of my skin, not absorbing. If you have oily skin perhaps it may be up your alley.

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Primer $12.99 - I shared this in my April Beauty Product Favorites (And Not So Favorite) round up. Loved the concept but not the results.

What primers have disappointed you?

  1. ha, this is awesome! Im glad you sampled these hefty priced products before people bought them! I shelled out like 20 something for the benefit pore shrinking primer....nothing. doesn't work at all!! i was sooo upset :(

  2. Love this. I stopped using primer. I learned that it makes my skin look dry, orange at times and just not healthy. I just go with regular face lotion and if it's a good one it works as a primer - at least for me. :)

  3. Thank you for this - I am just venturing into the world of primers, but with my allergies I have to be really, really careful. I tried the smashbox primer, for example, and my skin started tingling. I didn't have a full reaction and I loved the effect it had for my appearance, but I thought maybe I should not push it....Gonna try a few of the others. I wish Julep sent stuff to the UK!

  4. @Carisa Muller haha well you can't "shrink" pores so don't spend your $$ on those that promise that but I do like that benefit pore primer because it makes your skin super soft and hides flaws

  5. @Selma BB creams are a good compromise of a primer/lotion. There are definitely benefits to them but if your makeup is lasting then good for you :) You can also use setting powder as a finishing product

  6. @Serena M yes I don't have skin allergies but I've heard others have had issues with Smashbox. Sucks Julep doesn't ship to the UK!

At Sephora you can get samples so I'd test some free samples before investing :)
